FAWORIT 2013

“Fascinating World of Researchers in the Age of Technology – It sounds, tastes, looks, smells and feels good be a researcher!”

The ‘European Researchers’ Night’ is a pan-European event involving a wide range of scientific and research organisations, including museums, laboratories and academic institutions, which host a variety of entertaining and fun events planned to run late into the night. The aim is to give the public, and in particular young people, the opportunity to meet researchers within the context of festive and ‘fun’ activities and to highlight the appeal of pursuing a research career.. In our everyday life we are surrounded by an overwhelming amount of information, which is a challenge for all of our senses. Researchers have a unique attitude towards this challenge: they enjoy listening, tasting, seeing, smelling or feeling the world around us. Their curiosity helps them to interpret all this information and transform it into new solutions and inventions. Just like researchers we are all curious and use primarily our sense organs to experience our surroundings.

General Objectives of FAWORIT 2013

(1) to present the cool and creative life of the researcher and also (2) to draw the public’s attention to the Researchers’ contribution to the society by pointing out that we should also recognize the efforts, the everyday work and the person of the researcher because each time we eat, touch or see something we also meet their scientific results or inventions without even noticing them.

On 27 September 2013 the series of events will mainly focus on the Researcher – on his/her professional and on his/her “private” life. All the activities will be assigned to one of our five sense organs. The public will be “edutained” during the Night: scientific talks, presentations will be mixed with funny, entertaining elements. A large number of (young, old, male, female) researchers will be involved to be present at the event and, through interactive happenings, will be in direct contact with the large public. The target audience can thus discover that a research career is interesting, enjoyable and profitable.

Another, very significant aim of the project is to motivate the youth to choose a scientific profession and thereby to facilitate the increase in the number of researchers in the European Research Area. Our goal is to attract around 15 000 people to the Researchers’ Night itself, but a multiple of that number (500.000) will see, hear or read about this trendy and unique event
