The National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE), National Institute for Veterinary Research (NIVR), VOHUN/SEAOHUN network, BHC (British High Commission of Singapore), and CIRAD (French agricultural Research Center for International Development), are organizing a “One Health in action workshop”, which will be held from 13th to 15th of October 2014 in Hanoi, Vietnam(See flyer with tentative program attached herewith). This workshop is dedicated to the following theme : “From One Health Theory to Reality : Practical challenges, impact of One Health initiatives and gaps in research”, in the framework of FP7 European project SEA-EU-NET.

As part of the WP2 activities of the SEA-EU-NET 2 project, we will support this dedicated expert workshop which will gather about 50 participants with a double objective:

i) To deliberate on the concept, impact and practical challenges of One Health initiatives in Southeast Asia, and identify gaps and needs for One Health Research.

ii) To stimulate EU-SEA cooperation by promoting exchanges between EU and ASEAN experts, national and international institutes, and funding agencies on One Health research.

The Expected outputs are :

–           A policy note

–          One Health research topics

–       &nb sp;  Consortium proposals to address H2020 calls

The 3 main themes/sessions of the workshop will be :  Surveillance ; Ecohealth; Antimicrobial resistance

If you have particular individuals or organizations that we should consider involving as speakers or attendees, please do send us your recommendations.

One Health is a multidisciplinary approach to achieve optimal health for people, animals and the environment through local, regional and global research collaboration. Particularly in Southeast Asia, One Health has gained much more focus due to the rise of cross-species epidemics such as SARS, avian influenza, and Nipah virus. With 70% of emerging diseases being of animal origins, this has become a crucial issue for Southeast Asia due to increasingly high urbanisation rates and dramatic expansion of livesto ck production. In the past 10 years numerous position papers and workshops have proposed framework and guidance on practical implementation of the One Health concept to improve health management in the field. However a limited number of initiatives and projects have been implemented so far with limited results and/or limited visibility of the results. This workshop, therefore, will deliberate these issues in order to find research gaps and needs for One Health Research.
